Revised Ambitions

Removing grass. I'd heard tell that it's back-breaking work. And yet I fully expected, in a single day, to dig in a garden, plant 14 potted perennials picked up at end of season clearance, cover the new bed with layers of newspaper to discourage regrowth of grass and weeds, and top it all off with a bit of fresh soil. Oh, the delusions of the ignorant.
After eyeballing a roughly trapezoidal bed and struggling to remove the turf around the tree root choked perimeter, it was high time for a break. And to actually draw up a plan for the planting. Turns out, my wonky trapezoid is slightly larger than needed for the plants I have on hand (Russian sage [Perovskia atriplicifolia] and purple haze catmint [Nepeta 'Purple Haze' PP23180]) .
When it was time to switch gears and start cooking dinner, I'd prepared about two-thirds of the bed. Much more modest than my initial ambitions, but satisfying nonetheless.

(That 4 foot tall tree stump in the middle of the bed, if all goes as planned, will become a slightly shorter base for some sort of vessel for a bird bath.)

  1. It's lovely to have you back at your blog, Laurie. Great work on this garden patch - that's tough going around that stump!

Hope your not-so-new job is going well too.
